I read something today that was well written, but somewhat debatable in my opinion. “Poetry Is a Sickness” tries to convince us of this way of looking at writing, of expressing, with provocative language. Lee expresses that when we try to write about the beautiful, we sometimes end up with just the truth, but we can find the beautiful in those moments if we keep our eyes open, keep watching.
Want to write about the war, oppression, injustice, and look here, see, what got left behindwhen all the sand and dust cleared
The poem doesn’t talk about wanting to write about war, oppression or injustice though. It talks about writing that’s much more exploratory of beauty and supportive. The poem never really supports how poetry is a sickness either, just says that because C is 12, a light bulb is green.
Aside from these, the poem was really good. I did like it.
